MidCoast Villager: Reclaim Our Democracy

Everyone agrees that there is too much money in politics today, and in Maine we again have the opportunity to do something about it by voting "Yes" on Question 1. Question 1 proposes to limit individual contributions to Super PACs to $5,000, which would dramatically limit the ability of billionaires and corporations to influence the political process. This initiative is vital for preserving our democracy and ensuring that the voices of ordinary citizens are heard above the din of big money.
The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that reasonable limits on campaign contributions can help prevent corruption and uphold the integrity of our electoral process. This same principle should absolutely apply to Super PACs, where unlimited contributions can distort our political system. Capping contributions would foster a fairer environment, allowing candidates to focus on the needs of their constituents instead of catering to the wealthy.
