Sun Journal: Question 1 deserves approval

I am writing to urge everyone to vote “yes” on Question 1 in the upcoming referendum. This measure would limit to $5,000 the amount of money an individual or an entity can donate to a political action committee that supports or opposes a candidate for office.

The difference between a PAC and a SuperPAC is confusing and is hidden in legalese. Those who want to learn more can visit campaignlegal.org/update/pacs-super-pacs-dark-money-groups-whats-difference.

The Supreme Court allows regulation of contributions when they create a risk of quid pro quo corruption. Large contributions to candidates can lead to politicians owing favors to big donors instead of serving their constituents. This is a serious problem for our democracy.

Currently, donors can give unlimited money to SuperPACs, which violates the quid pro quo principle. These huge donations can unfairly influence our elections and make politicians beholden to a few wealthy individuals. This is not what democracy should be about.

By voting “yes” on Question 1, we can take a step toward getting rid of SuperPACs and ensuring that our elected officials are not influenced by large donations. This would help make our elections fairer, and ensure that politicians work for all of us, not just the rich.

Let’s work together to protect our democracy. Let’s reduce the influence of the rich on our elections.
